Rath Yatra 2019

Today is Rath Yatra.

The Lord comes out from His temple to meet His devotees.

From the morning we have been watching Live Telecast of Rath Yatra ceremony from Puri Jagannath Temple on Doordarshan. Along with the visual, there are commentaries by - Bharati Nandi, Abhay Kumar Padhi, Prabir Krishna Das and Sumana Ghosh about various facts. I am enjoying listening to all of them. Many stories of devotees like Raghunath Das and also about a devotee from a village who sent a Coconut for the Lord, some amazing facts as well as all the information related to the Rath yatra of Lord Jagannath, like how many parts are there in a Rath, their names, information about woods, about the different flags on the three differemt raths, their presiding deities, how Rath yatra is also considered as Dashavataar yatra, why Sudarshan comes out before all others to cleanse the mind of the devotees, so that the devotees can have the darshan of the Lord, how the dust particles as well as the wind of Puri is considered blessed during Rath Yatra- all are explained beautifully by the guests. We also came to know that the sea adjoining the temple is called Mahodadhi, which means- the great sea.

There are many other famous Rath Yatra festival like the Rath Yatra of Maahesh, West Bengal, (which reminds me of the famous story 'Rajani' of Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay), ISKCon Rath Yatra in  Kolkata, Rath Yatra of Ahmedabaad and many more.

A blissful day indeed!

Jai Jagannath!

'Sabson Unchi Prem Sagaai'- Song from B R Chopra's Mahabharat

This is one of my most favourite song from B R Chopra's Mahabharat. It is written by the great poet Surdas where he tells about the greatness of the Lord.

You can find the song by searching with the name of the song on YouTube.

Here is the lyrics and English Translation:-

Sabson (Sabse) unchi prem sagaai, Sabson (Sabse) unchi prem sagaai;
Of all forms of worship of the Lord, love is the highest.

(1) Duryodhan ke meva tyaage, Duryodhan ke meva tyaage;
Saag Vidur ghar khaai,
Lord Krishna renounced the delicacies that Duryodhana offered, and ate vegetables at Vidura’s house.
Sabson unchi prem sagaai....

(2) Jhoothe phal Sabri ke khaaye, Jhoothe phal Sabri ke khaaye;
Bahu vidhi swaad bataai,
As Lord Ramchandra, He ate fruits which were already filled with love from Sabari.
 Sabson unchi prem sagaai....

(3) Prem ke bas ripu seva kinhi, Prem ke bas ripu seva kinhi;
Aap bane Hari naai (??),
Love is indeed the best way to serve and please the Lord.
Sabson unchi prem sagaai....

(4) Raajsuyagya Yudhishthir kinho, Raajsuyagya Yudhishthir kinho;
Taame jhooth uthaai,
In Maharaja Yuddhistira’s Rajasuya Yajna sacrifice, Lord Krsna served the Brahmanas and picked up their eating utensils.
Sabson unchi prem sagaai....

(5) Prem ke bas Paarath rath haankyo, Prem ke bas Paarath rath haankyo;
Bhul gaye thakuraai,
Out of pure love for Arjuna, He took the position of being his charioteer, and He forgot that He was the Lord.
Sabson unchi prem sagaai....

(6) Aisi preeti badhi Vrindaavan, Aisi preeti badhi Vrindaavan;
Gopinh naach nachaai,
Such love did Lord Krishna portray in Vrindavana when He danced with the Gopis in the Rasa Lila.
Sabson unchi prem sagaai....

(7) Sur krur ihi laayak naahi, Sur krur ihi laayak naahi;
Kah lagi karon badaai (??),
The cruel/ harsh Suradas is not worthy to praise the merciful and magnanimous Lord.
Sabson unchi prem sagaai....

Duryodhan ke meva tyaage, Duryodhan ke meva tyaage;
Saag Vidur ghar khaai,
Sabson unchi prem sagaai....
Unchi prem sagaai......
Unchi prem sagaai......

Jai Shri Krishna.

'Bole Radha Shyam Diwaani'- A Devotional Song from the Hindi Film 'Tumhare Liye'

This is a very sweet song in which Radha tells about her feelings for Krishna. I listened to the song two years back I think. And liked it instantly because of the spontaneous expressions narrated in the song.

The films is- 'Tumhare Liye' (1978), singer Lata Mangeshkar, the lyricist is Naqsh Lyallpuri  and the music director is- Jaidev.

I have not watched the film, so do not know the situation of the song.

The way 'Govindam'- word is repeated many times, it creates a soothing effect on the listener :)

Thought to share the song with all of you :)

Here is the lyrics-

Bole Radhe Shyam DeewaniHo Bole Radha Shyam DeewaniPee Ka Mukhda Bhor SuhaaniPreet Bina Hai Jeevan Aise - 2Jaise Nadiya Ho Bin PaniGovindam Govindam - 4Mere Maana Mere Maana Mere Maana- 2

'Na Mai Dhan Chahun'- A Devotional Song from the Hindi Film 'Kala Bazar' (1960)

This is a devotional song where the devotee expresses her desire to attain the Lord.

I heard this song two years back I think. Loved it because of its sincere approach and the truth about life in the lyrics. The music also is very very appealing, something like a chanting effect is there in the song as some of the lines are sung repeatedly. That helps me to get lost in devotion.

The film is 'Kala Bazar' (1960), singers are Geeta Dutt and Sudha Malhotra, lyrics are by Shailendra, music director is S D Burman.

Na Main Dhan Chaahuun, Na Ratan Chaahuun
Tere Charanon Ki Dhuul Mil Jaaye
To Main Tar Jaauun, Haan Main Tar Jaauun
He Raam Tar Jaauun...

Moh Man Mohe, Lobh Lalachaaye
Kaise Kaise Ye Naag Laharaaye
Isase Pahale Ki Man Udhar Jaaye
MainN To Mar Jaauun, Haan Main Mar Jaauun
He Raam Mar Jaauun

Tham Gayaa Paanii, Jam Gayii Kaayii
Bahatii Nadiyaa Hii Saaf Kahalaayii
Mere Dil Ne Hii Jaal Phailaaye
Ab Kidhar Jaaun, Main Kidhar Jaauun - 2
Ab Kidhar Jaaun, Main Kidhar Jaauun

Laaye Kyaa The Jo Leke Jaanaa Hai
Nek Dil Hii Teraa Khazaanaa Hai
Shaam Hote Hi Panchi Aa Jaaye
Ab To Ghar Jaaun Apane Ghar Jaaun
Ab To Ghar Jaaun Apane Ghar Jaauun

'Hari Haraye Namah Krishna'

This is a very famous and old stotra on Shri Krishna. I heard it for the first time in the film 'Aagantuk'. Utpal Dutt was reciting this stotra, the original voice was of Satyajit Ray's, I think. But there the stotra remained incomplete as the next events of the film started taking place. From then, I always wanted to listen the full stotra along with reading it. Very recently I came to the audio track of the same and got the lyrics on internet. It has 10 stanzas, written by Narottam Das.

Above the post I have given the vidoe of the song from YouTube, and here is the lyrics, and the English translation (which I got from the internet, credit goes to the original writer who posted the lyrics).

(1)
Hari haraye namah krishna yadavaya namah
Yadavaya madhavaya kesavaya namah

(2)
Gopala govinda rama sri-madhusudana
Giridhari gopinatha madana-mohana

(3)
Sri-caitanya-nityananda sri-advaita-sita
Hari guru vaishnava bhagavata gita

(4)
Sri-rupa sanatana bhatta-raghunatha
Sri-jiva gopala-bhatta dasa-raghunatha

(5)
Ei chhoye gosair kori charana vandan
Jaha hoite bighna-nas abhishta-puran

(6)
Ei chhay gosai jar—mui tar das
Ta-sabara pada-renu mora pancha-grash

(7)
Tadera charana-shebi-bhakta-sane bash
Janame janame hoy ei abhilash

(8)
Ei chhay goshai jabe braje koila bash
Radha-Krishna-nitya-lila korila prakash

(9)
Anande bolo Hari bhaja vrindaban
Sri-guru-vaishnaba-pade majaiya mann

(10)
Sri-guru-vaishnaba-pada-padma kori aash
Narottama dash kohe nama-shankirtana

(1) O Lord Hari, O Lord Krishna, I offer my obeisances to You, who are known as Hari, Yadava, Madhava, and Kesava.

(2) O Gopala, Govinda, Rama, Sri Madhusudana, Giridhari Gopinatha, and Madana-mohana!

(3) All glories to Sri Caitanya and Nityananda! All glories to Sri Advaita Acarya and His consort, Sri Sita Thakurani. All glories to Lord Hari, to the spiritual master, the Vaishnavas, Srimad-Bhagavatam, and Srimad Bhagavad-Gita.

(4) All glories to Sri Rupa Gosvami, Sanatana Gosvami, Raghunatha Bhatta Gosvami, Sri Jiva Gosvami, Gopala Bhatta Gosvami, and Raghunatha dasa Gosvami.

(5) I offer my obeisances to the feet of these six Gosvamis. By bowing to them, all obstacles to devotion are destroyed and all spiritual desires are fulfilled.

(6) I am the servant of that person who is a servant of these six Gosvamis. The dust of their lotus feet is my five kinds of foodstuffs.

(7) This is my desire: that birth after birth I may live with those devotees who serve the lotus feet of these six Gosvamis.

(8) When these six Gosvamis lived in Vraja they revealed the lost holy places and explained the eternal pastimes of Radha and Krishna.

(9) Just shout the names of Lord Hari in great ecstasy and worship the transcendental realm of Vrindavana while absorbing your mind in meditation upon the divine feet of the spiritual master and the Vaishnavas.

(10) Desiring to serve the lotus feet of Sri Guru and the Vaishnavas, Narottama dasa sings this sankirtana of the holy names of Lord Hari.

Jai Shri Krishna.

Shuk Shaari Dwando

This is an old composition in Bengali literature I think. I heard this song for the first time in a Bengali play 'Dampati' by Manoj Mitra and Gita Dey. Back then I could not understand the meaning of the song, now I realise how the song is composed. Soul and body, Purush and Prakriti are the two elements which make the creation. This theme is presented in this song through the metaphor of Radha and Krishna. Here we can see how Radha and Krishna are inseparable. In any aspect of creation if we take out one from it, the creation does not exist.

The song is very sweet. The structure is like a competition or a question answer session between the devotees of Radha and Krishna regarding who is more important. They take many aspects of life, ask questions, answer them and gradually realise that they both are equally important. Two birds Shuk- Shaari (male- female) are used here as a spokesperson for the team of Krishna and Radha respectively.

The music has been in my ears from childhood. A few years ago one of my sister Semanti referred to this song and send me the YT link of it. I cherished the song again and today thought to write about it.

This is the lyrics of Shuk Shaari Dwando.
