Now we havw the story of Kurma Avtaar.
Once the gods became 'shreeheen'(without prestige// honour/ lustre) and they went to Shri Hari for help. He advised them to churn the sea, along with the asuras, to get the divine treasures, hidden in the depths of the sea.
Then Devraaj Indra went to Asurraj Baali, with the proposal of churning the sea together. Asur guru Shukracharya advised king Baali not to listen to the gods but Baali, because of his innate goodness, decided to attend and listen to Indra and all the other gods.
At first Asuras were apprehensive about Indra's proposal of churning the sea, then they agreed to it. Shukracharya wanted the equal division of all the treasures to be found from the sea, to that Indra agreed.
Mandraachal mountain was used to chrun the sea (as a 'mathni'), and when they were in a need for a solid base for the churning to take place, then Shri Hari appeared as a 'Kurma'(tortoise), so that His back could be used for the purpose. As the churning was going on, Brahma aided the gods to achieve their aim by sitting at the top of the mountain (Mandraachal ) as a symbol of hope .
We have beautiful song- "Praarambh hua saagar manthan, saagar manthan", here,. which tells us about the different things received from saagar manthan.
During the giant task of churning the sea , many ‘divine treasures’ came out –
First was a ‘deadly venom’ . to save the creation , LORD SHIVA drank up the poison and came to be known as – Neelkanth.
Here we have the wonderful lines- "Jai Neelkanth, Jai vishdhaari, Kalkyaankaran/ Shat koti naman, Shat koti naman, shat koti naman" in the background song.
After that came a divine tree , a diadem , a horse – Uchhaishrava , an elephant - Airaavat , a miracle cow - Kaamdhenu .
Then goddess Mahalakshmi appeared from the sea , who went to the feet of LORD VISHNU.
At last god Dhanvantri emerged with the nectar of immortality . but the asuras forcefully took hold of the nectar.
