Continuing with the story of Ramanand Sagar's 'Shri Krishna', today, I am going to write about King Parikshit. In 'Shri Krishna', his story comes after the stories of Bhakti Mata, and Narad garv bhang. Links of previous posts, given below.
THE STORY OF KING PARIKSHIT
PARIKSHIT was the grandson of PANDAVAS. He was a noble king. One day when he went for hunting, KALIYUG (as a man) came to him for shelter. At first, PARIKSHIT was against him, but then he gave four places (gambling den, liquor joints, the places of adultery and violence) to KALIYUG, so that he can stay there. Lastly, as KALIYUG requested again, PARIKSHIT said that he can stay in 'gold' also. KALIYUG immediately took shelter in the gold crown of the king.
After that, the king went to the ashram of sage SHAMIK and finding him doing ‘saadana', insulted him (because of the influence of KALIYUG residing in the gold crown on his head, about which, the king was completely unaware) . SHRINGU was the son of sage SHAMIK, who, after knowing about the insult of his father, cursed king PARIKSHIT that he would die in the next seven days.
PARIKSHIT came to know about the curse and went to his kulguru to find a way so that he can get salvation after death. Here we have very nice conversation about Salvation and Upliftment of the soul after a person’s death.
The guru explained - all the good deeds of a person lead him to enjoy heaven for a limited period, and after that the spirit is bound to reborn on earth. This cycle goes on forever.
But only Devotion can lead to Salvation. Devotion means to surrender whole-heartedly to LORD KRISHNA as the GOPIS of Vrindavan did. The only way to nurture the devotion in a person is by listening to 'Shrimad Bhaagwat'. It creates a wave of Bhakti in the mind of the listener.
After knowing about the pious text, king went to Ved Vyas’s son Shukdev and started listening to the Bhaagwat Puran. Thus he attained salvation only by listening to it and by chanting Shri Hari's name.
This is the story of king Parikshit, as shown in 'Shri Krishna'.
